Hi everyone! Many (and hopefully most) people are trying to maintain social distance all over the world in order to attempt to lessen the impact on healthcare facilities as COVID-19 spreads. My partner and I are some of those people, and we're gonna be stuck in our apartment without much to do for the next two weeks.
What are some of the things ya'll are doing to cope / does anyone have any fun ideas? What are ya'lls thoughts on this whole thing?
My wife and kids are in isolation due to schools shutting down, but I'm on the frontlines in the NHS. I'm 100% going to catch this shit, if I haven't already.
Keep safe out there people.
Paul is the coolest!
Was my post held for moderation because it had lots of links? (testing)
EDIT: Yes? Lucky I write my posts in draft-form elsewhere. Here's just one external link to a list of things to keep you occupied online
Just out of curiosity... Does anybody think any of this question are powerful enough to get to the bottom of anything?
PS: These questions were inspired by a person I'd willing to reveal if these questions interesting are enough!
@mod If you at all believe this post is problematic for any reason please do not hesitate to take appropriate action.
I am enjoying working from home, and trying to learn some Web development. It's nice and sunny today so I can be on the balcony, but it'll be cold on the weekend--just one way of looking on the bright side.
I try not to think too much about the whole thing, all it does is make me worry more about things outside of my control or knowledge. I just be responsible and take the standard precautions.
Aside from not going to work/school, for us this is completely normal. I spend most of my time writing my books, and both @Ivory and I post on typology forums. Although we have a couple irl friends, they live far away and we rarely keep contact in between occasional visits. Our small friend 'group' is in a chatbox online.
Normally, @Ivory goes to classes and we both work weekends, which now is not happening. But overall, we spend most of our time at home. We order in as often as possible, go to the grocery rarely and stock up so we don't have to go out again for weeks. The only thing we like doing outside the house is art stuff (videos, photos), taking walks in nature or eating (only because food is a necessity and we hate cooking). For a long time, we have hoped we can start an online business (if we think of something) so we never have to leave the house at all, aside from doing what we do with nature and art. If we had more money we would just order in all the time.
'Social distancing' is just how we are. I always go out of my way to avoid shaking people's hands and if I touch humans I wash my hands. We both don't hang out, go to clubs or bars, meet people, etc. We are not really feeling a significant difference except that our wallets are even more empty than usual, and I'm on edge since I'm high risk - due to chronic respiratory issues, immune issues, chronic illness -- and my brother who lives with us is still working at a grocery store.
My major thought is "I hope I (and those I love) don't die" and "We're broke." If we did not live with my brother and we had money, I doubt I'd think about it much at all. Issues around its impact on the world, ethics about how to handle it, etc - that is something I'd think about no matter what - but its impact on me personally is only relevant in the area of illness and money.
I'm gathering power.. building my army.. becoming better, faster, stronger, more cynical! ;p
Lol nah I'm just building my portfolio and preparing to look for a job once the quarantine's over. Hopefully there's still work out there for me by then! XD
@paul - I feel for your situation, and hope you and your family find a way to weather the storm without needing your administrators to miraculously sprout empathy glands. Having worked primarily in psych hospitals (ED and inpatient) that also needed to be liable for full medical care, it's obvious frontline healthcare workers are consistently undervalued and expected to shovel the feces flowing downhill with grins on their faces and a never-ending appetite for tending to the sick without becoming sick themselves. It's great (and I'm not bitter about it at all)! Frontline healthcare is not nearly as extrinsically rewarding as it could be, but unlike other sectors of the economy it possesses a strong and consistent demand for labor that won't be changing anytime soon.
@ladynerdsky - yes that's more than likely a security feature to prevent a spam-bot from posting a bazillion links all at once. I would approve the post if I had the capability, but currently I think those posts can only be approved by @auburn.
@epicentity - I don't see anything in your post that would warrant action 🙂
To the topic: Reading, writing, video games, stretching/exercising. So pretty much the normal stuff. Just wondering when curfews will be implemented, as I suspect they will be the next step taken here under the umbrella of infection control, while actually being used primarily to help manage rising crime levels if the economic recession continues apace.
