What is Psychodynamics?

Psychodynamics is the layer that deals with the effects of being a given type in the most elongated of time-frames; decades and lifetimes. It describes wide-scale narrative effects that arise from being a given type, as well as the over-arching relationship a person possesses towards archetypes connected to certain functions.

At these timescales, functions can no longer be talked about as mere mental processes, since they grow to become longstanding sub-personalities in the psyche, with their own motives, opinions and viewpoints. Psychodynamics explores the relationship an individual may have to their unconscious functions, the symbolic forms in which they may be encountered in the unconscious, and how they may be raised or lowered into consciousness, depending on what the patient needs.

Identification

Identifying what stage of integration a person might be in, with respect to each of their functions, requires time and careful discussion with a practitioner familiar with depth psychology and CT. However, there is also a survey under development, which aims to more rapidly approximate where a person might sit in their development.

Descriptions

The following profiles describe how the functions come to take on archetypal roles in the psyche, and how they may be expressed and experienced, consciously or unconsciously.

Quaternity

The quaternity refers to the four archetypes created by the four energetics, as Child, Prince, King and Senex. Each function has the corresponding essence of that archetype:

For example, a Je-lead like a TeSi naturally comes with King/Queen energy. They emit that energy, and the archetype is existent in their embodiment. For them, integrating the Child archetype corresponds to integrating their tertiary Pe (Ne, in the case of a TeSi).

The eight functions also have slightly different archetypal flavors on these four, which manifest in specific myths such as:

In this manner, therapists can guide people through a psychological journal, by confronting and accepting these elements of oneself, which brings me to:

Integration

Integration is the act of bringing unconscious functions into consciousness, and having them integrate into the core personality. In CT, development allows for the potential for all four functions to be conscious, denoted by the label “llll”, or any such combination. No development is seen as innately superior to the others, but each are a way of specializing one’s focus. These articles discuss this process, how it happens, and how to go about changing it, if desired:
