So I have recently thought that perhaps the four quadrants are linked to the four seasons, in the exact alphabetical order (at least by Greek alphabet).
I also have to clarify that I find the Phlegmatic Temperament to be linked to Earth signs, as Earth signs in astrology are more practical, conservative and peaceful. In addition to this, I have found the Si-Te or Worldview Pi Delta  type to be the purest embodiment of the Earth element personality.
I find the Melancholic Temperament is linked to Water signs, since in astrology they are linked to deep sorrow or intense joy, a deep sensitivity and introspective, idealistic nature. I have found that the Fi-Se or Compass Ji Gamma type to be the purest embodiment of the Water element personality, with auxiliary Se describing how deeply immersed they can become into their areas of interest, rather like being immersed beneath water.
I find the Sanguine Temperament is linked to Air signs, since in astrology they are considered to be carefree, lighthearted, imaginative and scattered in their thoughts. In addition when it comes to Air signs in astrology, they may appear more emotionally detached and logical, rather than being emotionally expressive in the way of the traditional Sanguine temperament. I have found the Ne-Ti or Explorer Pe Alpha type to be the purest embodiment of the Air Element personality.
The Choleric Temperament is definitely linked to Fire signs, since they are considered passionate, strong-willed, ambitious but also reckless, impatient and short-tempered. In addition to this, I have found that Fire signs in astrology are more emotionally obvious in their expression, compared to the hardhearted, emotionally detached description of the traditional Choleric temperament. The Fe-Ni or Articulator Je Beta type appears to be the purest embodiment of the Fire Element personality.
In any case, the zodiac signs are also found to be linked to certain seasons (though it only applies to the seasonal of the northern hemisphere).
One more disclaimer is that there are only 12 zodiac signs, while there are 16 main subtypes for each quadrant (apart from development from functions). Thus four sub-types will not have a sign directly assigned to them. Signs on the cusp of different seasons can be considered but its not a perfect fit.

    Si-Te/ Si-Fi Delta
    Earth (Phlegmatic), Winter = Capricorn
    Te-Si/Te-Ne Delta
Fire (Choleric), Winter = maybe Sagittarius
    Fi-Ne/Fi-Si Delta
    Water (Melancholic), Winter = Pisces
    Ne-Fi/Ne-Te Delta
    Air (Sanguine), Winter = Aquarius
    Ni-Te/Ni-Fi Gamma
Earth (Phlegmatic), Autumn = Maybe Capricorn
    Te-Ni/Te-Se Gamma
    Fire (Choleric), Autumn = Sagittarius
    Fi-Se/Fi-Ni Gamma
    Water (Melancholic), Autumn = Scorpio
    Se-Fi/Se-Te Gamma
    Air (Sanguine), Autumn = Libra
    Ni-Fe/Ni-Ti Beta
    Earth (Phlegmatic), Summer = Virgo
    Fe-Ni/Fe-Se Beta
    Fire (Choleric), Summer = Leo
    Ti-Se/Ti-Ni Beta
    Water (Melancholic), Summer = Cancer
    Se-Ti/Se-Fe Beta
Air (Sanguine), Summer = Maybe Gemini
    Si-Fe/Si-Ti Alpha
    Earth (Phlegmatic), Spring = Taurus
    Fe-Si/Fe-Ne Alpha
    Fire (Choleric), Spring = Aries
    Ti-Ne/Ti-Si Alpha
Water (Melancholic), Spring = Maybe Cancer
    Ne-Ti/Ne-Fe Alpha
    Air (Sanguine, Spring = Gemini

So when it comes to the four empty slots, the following may or may not apply.
Te-Si/Te-Ne Delta may be linked to either Sagittarius, as it is roughly in December which is the threshold between Autumn and Winter. It also fits the Gamma Te-Ni/Te-Se lead, since both share Te as a lead function.
Ni-Te/Ni-Fi Gamma may be linked to Capricorn, as it is the sign that comes just after Sagittarius, thus also being on the threshold between Autumn and Winter.
Se-Ti/Se-Fe Beta may be linked to Gemini, as it is on the threshold between Spring and Summer. it is also similar to the Ti-Fe axis found in Ne-Ti Alpha
Ti-Ne/Ti-Si Alpha may be linked to Cancer, being after Gemini and on the threshold between Spring and Summer. It is also similar to the Ti lead function found in Ti-Se Beta.
The seasons themselves seem to me intrinsically linked to the zodiac signs, they are placed in those seasons for specific reasons and I find this can correlate directly to the quadrants. A disclaimer though, correlation does not equal causation.
Thus Alpha types are linked to Spring, and by extension the Air Element.
Beta types are linked to Summer, and by extension the Fire Element.
Gamma types are linked to Autumn, and by extension the Water Element.
Delta types are linked to Winter, and by extension the Earth element.
Please let me know what you think and if you agree?
