So I am an Se-Fi with a I-I- development i.e I think Se-Te may make more sense. But I must say, I only relate to it partially. It's still interesting to see how each individual relates or doesn't relate to the cognitive functions they have developed.
Relating to my Te
Process-orientation:
What I relate to: I definitely agree with input/output and cause and effect. I do understand calculations of variables, but only engage with it as a matter of necessity. I do want to understand at a basic level “how things work” without it being overly technical, but I usually go by the recipe or follow the prescribed method of solving a problem.
What I don’t relate to: I’ve never been drawn to computer programming, digits or numbers. I’m definitely not a code junkie, coding was never my forte when I studied it as part of my university degree in Multimedia, preferring film and photography (which relates to my Se interestingly).
Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics:
What I relate to: I used to be drawn to astronomy when I was in primary school. I do enjoy watching certain videos about scientific phenomena where experiments are made, but its usually just because I find it entertaining. I do value clear measurement and can generally understand empiricism where necessary, particularly when I was in school.
What I don’t relate to: I’m not really interested in the nitty-gritty parts of science and chemistry such as the mathematical formulas, algebra, chemical compounds; these things perplex me. I have no interest in engineering, though I do see the value of it in society.
Economics & Business/Law:
What I relate to: I am able to draw up a budget for my finances as a matter of necessity. I took accounting in high school and failed it often. Taking extra classes and putting in the work helped me to at least achieve a fair result. I agree with meritocracy and that we should work hard for what we want, but this can also be unfair to those who are physically handicapped or financially disadvantaged due to circumstances beyond their control.
What I don’t relate to: I have no interest in government. I only dislike how government is just a bunch of figure heads making empty promises but never delivering on them, and I can’t stand the hypocrisy and corruption. I could never see myself as a businessman or entrepreneur, although I think I would be a fair, egalitarian one. I struggle with giving away money to those who may not always deserve it.
Challenge & Conscientiousness:
What I relate to: I definitely cannot stand being idle. I am definitely drawn somewhat to challenge, action and achievement, although I haven’t always been confident enough to become involved when others could do the job instead. I do wish to get things done, such as helping to pack dishes into the dishwasher, occasionally tidying up my bedroom, doing groceries for my parents. I value diligence, work ethic and in this regard I can be structured.
What I don’t relate to: I wouldn’t say I am obsessive compulsive about keeping everything in order. I am satisfied with a general sense of having my priorities in order. I am not insensitive to feelings or my own weakness. Although I am goal-oriented, I’m not by any means a busybody and know where my limits are. I’m not militant, but I do expect everyone to do their share when it comes to household tasks.
Management and Leadership:
What I relate to: I am very conscientious and believe in punctuality, meeting deadlines and doing what is required of me to the best of my ability. I am generally a law-abiding citizen and sometimes scoff at rulebreakers around me. I can do what is necessary, but this will only be when I do it out of my own free will, not when I am forced or coerced to do so. I wouldn’t say I’m tactless, but I definitely prefer doing something by myself even if it takes longer. I struggle to ask for help, and don’t always ask enough questions.
What I don’t relate to: I’ve always shied away from being in a position of command or a managerial position, perhaps due to a lack of self-confidence and because I’d rather just go my own way.
Bluntness and Argumentation:
What I relate to: I am generally straightforward and will say things the way they are, if I feel comfortable doing so. I am quite matter-of-fact and believe that my truth is the truth, even when it isn’t always the case for other parties. I was a terrible liar as a child, and would always get caught if I was dishonest.
What I don’t relate to: I am not blunt to the point of insensitivity. I do dislike offending others and might keep my mouth shut when I should speak up.
Steamrolling:
What I relate to: I definitely can’t stand complexity and just want a simple solution to a problem. It’s very frustrating having to repeat the same steps again that I’ve already tried before. I’ve been in many arguments with people where the point I’m making seems objectively true, but the other person just stubbornly refuses to agree with me. Perhaps that makes me a bit of a steamroller.
What I don’t relate to: I don’t think I’d go to extremes when it comes to cutting away people from the workforce, unless they really aren’t contributing anything, as I value loyalty.
Relating to my Se, which is my dominant function. I definitely see some of the patterns at work in my life, but its interesting to see how I've grown out of certain challenges that my Se attitude gives me.
Heightened Focus
What I relate to: I just so happen to love photography and film, and studied it at my university. I have a heightened receptivity to sensory information, and can become easily overwhelmed or underwhelmed if it is out of balance. I definitely value realism when it comes to the portraits I draw of people’s faces, and I’m somewhat disappointed when my drawings aren’t close enough to the real thing. I definitely agree that I cannot focus on more than one thing at a time. I do enjoy immersing myself in a game, but more so with music playing through my headphones or watching a music video. I generally have a good understanding of what colours to use in a painting or drawing, although I’m not afraid to experiment and try something outside of the norm occasionally.
Flow and Improvisation
What I relate to: I love existing in direct contact with life, and I tend to get lost in the moment especially when indulging in life’s pleasures such as delicious food, beautiful music, movies or when traveling. I used to enjoy singing a lot, but I lost interest because when I started doing singing lessons it felt like a chore and took me out of that immersive flow. I definitely value elegance and going with the flow, but it is something I am mastering continuously.
What I don’t relate to: I think I can be a bit clumsy and will sometimes bump my head or walk into things, but perhaps this is due to preoccupation with something else e.g. I will bump my head into a tree when I go walking due to listening to music on my earbuds.
Vitality and Volition
What I relate to: I was told by a stranger that I am an opportunist because I saw an opportunity to get closer to the front of the queue. I tend to raise my hand more often than others when I am at a seminar or lecture, so you could say I am opportunistic at an intellectual level when I want to ask a question or express my opinion.
What I don’t relate to: I’m not always as opportunistic as I could be in the physical world, due to a fear of negative consequences at times. In an ideal world, I would be more of a risk-taker. I love riding on rollercoasters or doing exciting things in my mind, but at times my fear and anxiety gets in the way. I experienced a panic attack when I travelled alone for the first time to a foreign country. However, I realized that if I’m thrown into the water, I learn how to swim and adapt to the new environment.
Movement and Restlessness
What I relate to: I definitely get bored easily and long to get moving, particularly if I’ve been sitting down all day. I definitely can’t stand being forced to do boring, mundane tasks, and will only do it out of my own volition. The lockdown was definitely suffocating for me as I was forced to stay home all the time and couldn’t really go out. I definitely have a desire to travel and explore, which is what lead me to go and work in China and also travel to South Korea, despite the many challenges I faced along the way and my anxiety about leaving my family behind.
What I don’t relate to: Even though I love travel and exploration, I still want to have a place I can call home. I may become too attached to personal belongings and hoard them, instead of letting them go. I may also be too afraid to apply for a new job, but my father taught me to put myself out there and take risks, because my livelihood depends on it. I wouldn’t say I misbehaved that much as a child; I was usually quite obedient, although I did have moments of mischief.
Persistence Effect
What I relate to: the persistence effect has played a very big role in my life. As someone who is highly sensitive to my environment, I get easily annoyed or overwhelmed by loud noises, putrid smells, scratchy clothing etc. However, people around me tend to think I’m haughty or stuck-up because of this. I definitely have found it hard to get my mind off of these irritations, but there has been improvement and it has gotten easier to deal with.
Ergonomics and Aesthetics
What I relate to: I definitely have an appreciation for ergonomics and how something looks, feels, sounds or tastes like. I definitely like playing games or watching videos in high definition, or listening to music that has enhanced sound. I was told as a child that I should become a fashion designer, as I loved drawing women with beautiful dresses and doing makeovers. I also really care about my hairstyle, and will try to emulate the hairstyles of certain Korean popstars. My father tends to buy specially made shoes that make his feet feel more comfortable, and he will recommend that I buy a certain brand of clothes because of the good material.
What I don’t relate to: I wouldn’t say I’m necessarily a fan of designer brands, due to their high prices. I was raised to be rather frugal with my money and perhaps due to this upbringing, I will feel guilty when I buy something expensive, even though I’ve had moments where I overspend when I could have gotten the same product or service at a cheaper price somewhere else.
Sensual Energy
What I relate to: Despite not indulging in my sexuality, I definitely have an awareness of it and have had those kinds of thoughts which were rather difficult to control. However, I’ve realized that I should simply avoid obsessing with those images, then I will be free.
What I don’t relate to: I tend to not indulge in my sexuality, due to my spiritual beliefs in abstinence. I have no idea how to flirt, and in my first relationship I felt quite shy and hesitant to engage in intimacy. I did enjoy certain aspects of it, but always felt like I had to reign myself in.
Addiction
What I relate to: I have probably been addicted to junk food and sugar, certain music and sensual thoughts that I found hard to control. I think I definitely relate to wanting immediate alleviation from the unbearable here and now, especially when I have to deal with an insurmountable problem. It feels like I am stuck in the present moment and need something to distract me. Having to stand in a long queue can make me feel restless, and I tend to have shaky limbs because of this.
What I don’t relate to: I’ve never been addicted to anything like alcohol, drugs or tobacco.
Delinquency
What I relate to: If I’m at a gathering or party and there is food, I tend to help myself to the food, whilst others might not do the same. However, I am generous and will always make sure everyone gets enough. Although I would never shoplift or rob anybody, I used to steal candy from my mom’s storeroom (she is a teacher), or I would eat the leftovers my brother left behind. These behaviours quickly subsided as I grew into adolescence though. I think as an adult, I will get the impulse to eat chocolate or potato chips, but have learned moderation and temperance along the way.
What I don’t relate to: although I do seek the best experience possible, I have learned that there are consequences for my actions.
Relating to my Fi, which is unconscious, but definitely a function I relate to as I am quite emotionally sensitive, individualistic and empathic.
Seeking the Truth of Life
What I relate to: I can see how I use my body and emotional register as a compass to discover a truthful way of existence. My spirituality and sense of truth and goodness definitely go hand in hand with this.
Attunement and Purification
What I relate to: I think I want to move past that sense of complexity and confusion, and reach a place of purity and clarity. When I’m unsure of how to handle a situation, I definitely feel frozen and lost, like I’ve lost my characteristic Se mobility for a while. I am sensitive to evocations from myself due to my permeable nature.
Permeability
What I relate to: I do have a strong receptivity to my own emotional energy, as well as that of others, whether through seeing someone express emotions on their face or hearing beautiful music which will cause happy tears to flow. I am definitely sensitive to a jarring, conflict-ridden atmosphere as it feels like an attack on my inner alignment. I definitely relate to being an empathic person. I may also tend to want to step into the shoes of another person, especially a celebrity I admire. I may even imagine myself having the same body as them, emulating everything they do. This can be dangerous and cause me to lose my sense of self.
What I don’t relate to: I wouldn’t say I’m open to sexual exploration and I wouldn’t say I experience my empathy on a sensual, erotic level. It’s usually not that deep or pervasive.
Emotional Palate
What I relate to: I think because I am so permeable and amenable to others, being very agreeable and friendly to the extent that I almost have no boundaries, it can be difficult to establish boundaries without having a strong emotional reaction that feels aggressive or confrontational. It feels uncomfortable having to say no to others and then not having them respect my boundaries at all. Due to this, people have been known to take advantage of me. Interestingly, I am actually quite picky and finicky about what clothes I wish to buy, what films I wish to watch and what games I want to play, which can make me appear disagreeable to my brother. Although I am not Unseelie, I definitely think it’s good to balance out my Seelie nature with some Unseelieness in order to protect myself from being vulnerable.
Discovery of Inner Essence
What I relate to: I am aware that we are all unique individuals with sacred souls, but these can be vulnerable to damage from an imperfect, harsh external world. I constantly find myself living through imaginary characters and personas almost instinctively. I am definitely trying to move away from being a moulded copy of an ideology that isn’t my own. I think since I was a child I’ve loved the idea of people acting like certain animals. I also have a deep connection to nature and I used to love the Night Elves from World of Warcraft because of their connection to nature and the wild. I also used to have long hair funnily enough, although I did cut it out of boredom eventually.
Idiosyncrasy and Self-expression
What I relate to: I have longish hair for a guy, something that is frowned upon by my family and peer group, although I don’t think my hair is that long that it looks unkempt. My hair has always played a big role in my identity, both positively and negatively. I did experiment with wearing makeup at one point, due to being influenced by Kpop and the men wearing makeup. But due to my upbringing, I felt a deep sense of shame and guilt and decided to stop wearing it. I have always been called eccentric due to my artistic talent and personality, but I don’t think I ever fully embodied it due to my gender, upbringing and beliefs.
Hypersensitivity and Overwhelm
What I relate to: I am definitely too sensitive to negative vibes and cannot tolerate hostile environments without being upset. I may not always collapse into tears, but even my own anger will upset me. I have been criticized by teachers and lecturers for being moody and sulky, and I am sometimes quite volatile and have angry outbursts. I have also gone through episodes where I become rather disenchanted with life, with love, with finding the right career. But I don’t dwell on this sadness for too long, as it makes me feel stifled and suffocated, and I tend to bounce back quite quickly. I think as a high school student I felt depressed and sad because I had no friends and was bullied for being ‘different.’
Alexithymia & Dissociation
What I relate to: I have definitely experienced a certain level of dissociation, perhaps due to taking medication for anxiety. I will sometimes watch a scene from a film that is supposed to be emotionally evocative, only to feel numb inside, such as when a character dies. While I don’t have Asperger’s or Autism, I do tend to avoid connecting with strangers unless they talk to me. I also relate to private tears that start flowing for no reason, particularly when I listen to certain kinds of music.
