@Auburn thank you for doing Michael Gira. Swans is one my favorite bands. this interview is very telling.
My initial guess for Gira was also SiFe so I'm pleased to see that confirmed. Swans emerged from the New York punk scene, when the city was a lot grittier, more dangerous, and more "ghetto" than it is now. From that environment  emerged music that ranges from violent and gritty (especially the early releases) to abstract and ethereal, but even the violence of his music can be beautiful and sublime because it comes from that "deep sex and death place in the stomach" (3:56 in the interview I linked). He often sings about power, violence, religion, sex, and death, and often combining all of these subjects to create dark, beautiful, and haunting cinematic musical pieces that punch you in the gut.
