Hi, I am importing this thread from the old forum, since it may be useful to newcomers. This was originally written by me on Apr 13, 2013 - and hasn't been proof-read. (Please replace "abstract" with associative, and "concrete" with literal, wherever mentioned)

    Ne/Si & Ni/Se:

Ne is more similar to Se, and Ni more similar to Si.

    • Ni and Si are mapping/anchoring functions.
    • Ne and Se are exploration functions.

If we wanna use a metaphor: One holds the map, the other goes indiana jones style into new territory.
And they can't be described well without one another, so indeed they work in tandem.
NiSe holds an abstracted map, but does literal exploration.
SiNe holds a literal map, but does abstract exploration.

What that means, practically, is that Ni has a mental spider web of intangible patterns which govern the causality of the universe. Se uses this map to travel through the present tangibly, sensationally, and each literal experience undertaken is transformed into an abstraction and stored into the intangible paradigm - broadening the person's understanding. Si has a mental paradigm of tangible correlations which dictate the laws of the world. Specifics like what times things occur, in what sequence and due to what events. Ne uses this solid map to quest through the present, intangibly and imaginatively, using concretes as anchor points from which to begin a new exploration and expand the map.

A note about the difference of these maps:

The Ni map operates more like Fractal Art. It converts a pattern into a formula, and multiplies it at infinitum to fill in the gaps of unknown territory. The Si map operates more like a Matrix. It fills in it's map like a collection of independent experiences. The experiences are not connected via a formula like Ni's map. They are simply all catalogued into a matrix. It is Ne that does the connecting of Si's map. Ne takes that matrix of experiences and dabbles with the data to form cross-contextualizations. Those connections weave the paradigm together. For Se, it needs not do what Ne does because the connections are already made, it merely flows within those connections, those fractal-tangents, in the real world. And doing so allows Ni the opportunity to view reality to identify more governing formulas.

A note on the Why of the pairings:

The Ni map would be disturbed by Ne's process since it is non-synthesizing. Having Ne and Ni would make both useless. Ni needs the concrete exploration of Se in order to extract it's formulas. And Ne needs some concrete lego blocks to create new connections. Ne cannot use Ni's data because it's abstract like itself. A fire cannot burn from a fire, it has to burn from the coals. And vice versa: two coals are useless if they don't create fire. There would be no point in Se exploring Si's map because it is already known. Ne is the one who needs to hold the finite Si  map and identify, at infinitum, the places where more exploring is necessary.

To put it differently, a line cannot be made from one point. And an association (the basis for abstraction) cannot be made without two or more tactile points of data. This is why it's not possible to have both Ne and Ni, and no S functions.

    Data Synthesis

I made a video to illustrate (or try to) the difference in how these two maps form a perception of reality. In the video, the woman represents Reality. The artistic paths/methods are how each of the two goes about painting their worldview from scratch; creating their own image of the woman.

    (video slightly updated)

In the Ni drawing we can liken the cursor to Se, and the web that tails behind it is the Ni worldview being formed from Se's exploration. As you can see the Ni map is formulaic, as opposed to just a direct line, and it makes the painting using multiple curvatures which cover more area in less time. The timing and velocity of the cursor (Se) affects what kind of curves are created as well. In the Ne drawing, we can liken the dots to random data (Si) attained from the world. As more dots populate the screen we start to see a sort of outline form. Ne then enters in (as the lines) and "connects the dots" of data to form a more coherent picture. Of course, my artistic abilities are pretty crappy and this was done really fast but I hope it gets the main idea across. ^^ This is only a partial metaphor of what I mean. I think more accurate illustrations would be three dimensional. And ideally the contours of the Ni map could be bent and moved like chickenwire - by the calibration of discernment functions. And equally, the Si/Ne map could be illustrated better. Ideally the map would also be constantly cutting and repasting sections of itself in other locations (Ne moving the dots around) like a jigsaw puzzle and reorganized to fit more accurately.

I didn't go into fine detail with either of the two, but with more time, eventually the two images would begin to look incredibly similar - via two different approaches. It's not impossible for the two different methods to look almost identical.

But still, I think that no matter how similar they may come to be, the Ni/Se map will still be made from a single very very curved and overlapping fabric. Sorta like taking a blanket, soaking it in glue and making a human statue from it. Inversely, no matter how similar the Ne/Si map may seem to the Ni/Se map, it'll still be made by independently glued bits. Sorta like making a statue by gluing together small pieces of paper.

They may appear the same at a glance, but there are consequences to this difference which expresses itself when the time comes to adjust the shape/worldview. When the Ni worldview needs to be adjusted (say a piece that is on the elbow needs to go the head) the rest of the attached concepts (fabric) bend and go with it.

In contrast, if there was a piece in the Ne/Si statue that was on the elbow which fits better on the head, it could just be detached and pasted on the head without affecting the rest. This is why the bending of the Ni map can sometimes lead their users to mysterious or superstitious concepts as their worldview can take odd shapes. It is a result of a concept(s) being twisted out of shape, due to it naturally being attached to another concept that it was (rightly) trying to connect somewhere more appropriate -- but the others tagged along with it.

P.S. But it's important to keep in mind this is just a metaphor still. Not all things describe it perfectly, and it can't be taken too literally. But if it serves to offer a new way of looking at them, then I'm happy.

If Ne, which is Si's perceiving interface to the outside world, uses abstract exploration, then how does Si acquire the literal/concrete information to store on its map?

Aha, that's the curious thing about the Ne/Si oscillation. Si doesn't acquire literal/concrete information from Ne; it makes Ne's information literal and concrete.

Suppose for example that there is an Ne-lead and and Si-lead sitting in the break room during lunch hour, having a conversation. The Ne-lead throws out six different associative observations or brainstorms. The Si-lead remembers exactly what the six associations were, and what was said, in a literal way. The next day they're in the break room again, and the Si-lead asks the Ne-lead to continue what he was saying about the sixth association before their last break ended. The Ne-lead doesn't recall what exactly he said, and asks the Si-lead what it was. The Si-lead relays what he said faithfully as it was conveyed to him (literally), despite the fact that the information provided was associative. This same relationship happens within the mind of Ne/Si users. Among the many things Si does, it also acts as a literal "save" feature to Ne's exploration process.

This is actually true even of Si-leads, who will also take in reality via Ne first; a reality which will always be at least a little "fuzzed-up" before it anchors down literally. And this naturally raises the question of how Si-leads can be considered literal types. Well, it has to do with the amount of cycles spent in the corresponding processes, and how much of the data is converted to one form or the other. Even though Si-leads (unconsciously) take in reality through Ne's data-absorption, since only Ne can gather the information, their greater amount of cognitive processing in Si makes it so that the information doesn't have much time to branch/diverge (Ne) before it becomes solidified in Si as anchors. The longer an information-set spends in Ne, the more divergent it becomes before ossification occurs. If Ne is sufficiently depreciated, the time it spends in Ne's Pe-gathering-function can be so small that its arrival into Si is fairly close to the the outer world as-is.

You did say that this is a metaphor, which suggests one should be cautious about drawing conclusions and making predictions about the underlying reality from the metaphor.  However, I have to say that Ne/Si sounds quite whacked.  I assume you don't find it to be a whacked description of your own cognition though, so I'm not going to dismiss it just yet.

Surely Ne is not the outer-most interface an Ne/Si user has to the sensory world in that they also have raw sense impressions, on which Ne operates.  Likewise, Se itself is not the outer-most interface that Se/Ni users have with the sensory world--they too have raw sense impressions on which Se operates.

You've used efficiency as a basis for rejecting eight-function stack typologies, but with this special twist on Ne/Si, it seems that you're positing some very inefficient cognition.  Why wouldn't Ne/Si users evolve to just pass sense impressions straigh through to Si for literal recording, rather than passing them through the imaginative process of Ne, only for Si to turn around and "make" this content literal again?  When the Ne/Si user wants to be creative, they could then activate Ne, which could operate on both the literal internal map of Si and the raw incoming sense impressions in real-time.  Or perhaps Ne could operate in a purely "pass-through" mode between the senses and Si until the person wishes to be creative or exploratory.

It's odd that Se/Ni doesn't have a corresponding inefficiency in which Ni has to break the product of higher-level processing of Se down into the raw sense impressions in order build a realistic map.  Why not?

The metaphor, as stated, would seem to suggest that neither perception axis is capable of recording faithful memories of sense impressions.  In the case of Se/Ni, personal experience by way of the senses gets abstracted down to themes before storage.  In the case of Ne/Si, raw memories are recorded only to the extent that Si is able to extract the literal details behind Ne's associations.  Theorizing that Si can maximize the literal faithfulness of perceptions by cutting down the use of Ne to a minimum seems to create a new problem: Si leads who curb their Ne to such an exact simply won't have much of anything to archive in the first place.

Oh, I think this convo's gotten off on the wrong foot, and I think it's partly because the post is old and uses old terminology for S/sensation. As you guys know, terms like "the sensory world" and "raw sense impressions" should not be equated with S, and are really two different discussions. So lets begin again by reiterating that S =/= sensory. And it would be incorrect to say that the graphical input from the optic feed ("raw sense impressions") is equivalent with S.

Strictly speaking, what I mean by 'S' is a high-order ontological property that cannot be assigned to an object until it enters the arena of mental processing ("working memory") as per the CTA. See here:

^ The yellow lines here at the top represent the "raw sense impressions" or "sensory world", but I'd prefer to call it the information from the "optic feed" which has not yet been converted into cognizant objects of the sort humans perceive. The optic feed then goes through primordial visual processing even before it reaches object management. This is where things happen such as optical illusions, color corrections, etc, and it happens in the visual cortex. The data is still rather raw and not constellated as mental objects.

Once it enters what I call "working memory", that is the first time anything can even take on the shape of being a cognitively-recognized object, literal (S) or otherwise. So it's not that I am saying there's an inefficient meandering from S to N back to S. The property of an object being literal is not about it being graphic in nature (pixels are not mental objects), but it's about whether it's treated as discrete things or not by our consciousness. Within working memory is where an object becomes a discretely recognized object (S), as it enters awareness. I think we're agreeing on this, but I just wanted to clarify to be sure. From an A.I. perspective, you can think of this as the creation of the "bounding box."

But anyhow, that gets rid of the S in the "S-->N-->S" meandering. But that still leave us with N-->S.

When I say it goes through Ne first, in Ne-Si users, this is not as challenging or wacky of an idea as it may sound. When we look at the minute scale at which processing happens in the mind, nothing really complex happens until abstractions are nested many layers deep first. So, saying it goes through Ne first, yet being largely unaffected by divergences because few computation cycles are run there, before reaching Si, is a wholly valid statement to make. If Ne doesn't have time to nest a lot of layers of abstraction atop of each other, it will function basically like generic Pe:

^ So here we see the yellow lines representing the pathway of processing cycles. As you can see, there are many more cycles in P-, which is Si in this case. This would be an Si-lead. However, the information passes through P+ (Ne here) first, but doesn't linger there much, and thus doesn't have much time to be modified into associations. And I think this is essentially your "pass through mode" idea, yes, exactly. I think we're in agreement here.

Now, I suppose I'm happy to be debated on this point, because there are other realities that are plausible. It could be that the optic feed reaches Ne and Si at the same time (like, from the right-hand side of the CTA diagram), rather than needing to go through Ne first. But one reason I believe it goes through Ne first is because we know data-exploration is handled by Pe. For example, the Ne toggles happen alongside Ne brainstorming, indicating that Ne activation also activates the visual-search.

    Note on 8-function models.

Anyhow, since my mind is already here, I'd like to talk about model simplicity since you brought it up. Not to anyone in particular.

One thing to note is that many models which require themselves to have eight-functions are the sort that cannot escape giving everyone Se because they've essentially baked together Se and sensory-input. And they can't deny anyone the sensory input. I don't require that in my model, nor do I require all people to have Se (even if in some 'shadow' form), because the optic feed is not the same as Se. I hold that my modelling view is still more simple than the 8-function hypothesis, which would require a whole lot more mental redundancy, all of which requires greater evolutionary explanation, as you know.

But there's another thing that CTA model does more simply, and this is part of CT as a whole. In CT, the core of the system is Je-Ji-Pe-Pi (the apparatus), wherein the functions are around 80% similar between variants (like Ne or Se, for Pe). There is a lot of "default" processing that the four energetics do, which is agnostic to the axes.

This allows for the above effect that I'm describing to happen, where the ~80% generic Pe element of Ne, can gather data, bring it into working memory, and let Si handle it with minimal associative supplementation. Likewise it allows for compound functions to be understood in like manner. When an FiSe does something like physics or programming, they can use the generic elements of their Ji's definitional-processing, and puts them to use for Te purposes, producing an "IT" compound effect that has minimal biotic elements.

In my view, allowing for the CTA to operate this way is really the least convoluted option, if we're coming from a truly cognitive/neurological perspective, because it considers the obvious and inevitable effect of high-order processing, and how that would create all the unavoidable compound effects between functions that one could imagine, within the span of seconds. It's not just functions compounding with each other, but those compounds also compounding with themselves in the next cycle, and the next, and the next. Every opportunity exists for information to pass on to another process.

Models that require 8 functions often treat cognition very one-dimensionally, as a single layer (rather than infinite) that has to hold everything in that one flat layer or not have it at all. So they give themselves an Se and an Si function, because they can't imagine a system evolving through time and through abstract layering, and being able to manage any informational situations (N/S/T/F/E/I) through the inevitable collision of all four energetics in the same person's mind.

Okay, I think I'm done. Phew, I need to work on other things. I will get to followup messages sometime later!

    @Auburn:

I think we're agreeing on this, but I just wanted to clarify to be sure.

Yes, I recognize that Se (and Si) do not refer to "sensory".  What I'm questioning though is whether all objects that land in working memory must be mucked around with by Ne before being woven into the Si worldview.  Sometimes they might be, sure, but not all the time, and this model doesn't seem to allow for that possibility.  It also doesn't accord with my own experience.

Also, the same could be asked about Se/Ni: Why must objects that reach working memory be further processed by Se before going straight to Ni for abstraction and archiving?

If the above model is correct, then it would seem that extremely low or non-existent Pe development would choke off Pi from any content at all and that a worldview wouldn't even be possible.  This seems clearly not to be the case though.

I see. I'm sorry, I think I was too simplistic (binary) in my earlier message. I agree with you that they don't have to be 'mucked around' with Ne beforehand. I mainly meant that Ne is involved, but it could just be in a general Pe capacity (re: pass-through).

Sometimes they might be, sure, but not all the time

Right. Thank you for helping me clarify my thoughts on this too. Also hi! good to see you around.

I would sum it up like this :

    • Ne/Si oscillation: sensory data (from nose, mouth, eyes, etc.) --> brain memory + Ne, to form abstract transformations from reality/stored memory/puzzled worldview + Si, to form a puzzled worldview from reality/stored memory/abstract transformations,
    • Ni/Se oscillation: sensory data --> brain memory + Se, to form real transformations from reality/stored memory/linear worldview+ Ni, to form a linear worldview from reality/stored memory/real transformations.

So, not only the ancient brain is always involved, through data collection and storage, but also the relatively modern brain portion results involved, through an ongoing transformation,  real or abstract,  or worldview building, puzzled or linear.

I, obviously, see the borders not rigid but overlapping each other.
