Wow, you really dropped a truth bomb there, didn’t you, @animal? Hollywood is ruining our lives and we don’t even realize it.

I am also aware of ways in which the media is trying to brainwash me, so I often think about the messages that are really being taught to us. My observation is that many people just ‘absorb’ these tropes and messages, and don’t stop to think about how it might be harmful to their psyche.

One that has definitely affected me is the coming-of-age stories where a person pursues their real dreams and it all works out in the end. I think there’s a false promise in there. I wish they’d portray stories about those who take those paths away from the conventional paths and regret it. No, I don’t want people not to live their ‘real lives’ but I think people should know that living so should be done for its own sake, not as a promise of success.
