I have a flat affect and it makes sense that I have it since I did go through a very deep depressive episode about a year ago. It was a mental and physical journey: vivid visions of the future and the past; anxiety (which I’ve never had); exploring/getting lost in mental labyrinths, powerful (that is, physical) emotions; psychosis; and saw first hand how much our brain/mind is in control of our thoughts/feelings/desires/fears/and basically all that consists of our sense of self. Before reading Jung I had already analyzed that the depression I had was a sort of brain/mind mechanism that had been triggered for survival because, in the end, the question was whether to live (adapt to the problem at hand) or die and the whole process (which Auburn calls submersion) was towards figuring that out.
