Imported from the "Cognitive Type" book, published in March 2016.

My earliest initiation into the question of Type began in the same way that it does for thousands of students across the country: through an MBTI career assessment in preparation for college. Since then (2007) both recreational and rigorous thought has been channeled into the topic, as the behaviorism of MBTI left many fallacious misconceptions, and the theoretical foundation of C.G. Jung, although far more insightful, rendered many concepts unverifiable.

Like the tentative glow of the sun before dawn, sufficient evidence lay before me to convince me that a phenomenon sat beneath the surface, yet it seemed buried in ambiguity. The past five years have seen a rapid refinement of the ideas and observations I’ve unearthed, with the collaboration of many friends and fellow researchers. I owe a special thanks to Emily Harries, Finnian Staff and Jonathan Rock for spurring me in this new, visual direction of inquiry and challenging me to better explore and explain this phenomenon. I also owe my sincerest thanks to Elsa Carlsson, Pierre S. Jouve, Fernanda Spinelli Cruz Cardoso, Filippo Medas, Laure Lepoivre and Renée Bayard who helped me pilot these ideas during their beginning phases of consolidation and offered suggestions as to their refinement.

I would also like to extend my thanks to the Pod’lair research group. Having an alternative perspective on the topic of visual reading, they have acted at times as a helpful contrast point for my own direction of inquiry. And despite the many theoretical differences we face, as well as challenges in communication that have all but rendered collaboration impossible, I am grateful for their pursuit for understanding regarding the topic of vultology, as I’ve now come to call it.
