NiFe

Valein

The NiFe type emerges when the Ni-Se oscillation is primary and lead by Ni, while supported by the Fe-Ti judgment oscillation. As with the SiFe, this type’s eyes will be a prominent feature of their face, not because of their alertness or size but due to their consistency and subtle dominance. Always relaxed and steady, they will act as the unspoken chauffeur of their person and introduce at once the qualities of their entire demeanor.

The upper eyelid will rest lightly over the top part of their eyes, while the area surrounding the eyes will possess a light pull from Se’s influence, often elevating the outer edges of the brow. The eyes of the NiFe will carry a hypnotic quality, and this quality will be amplified by Fe’s emotional allure and charisma. The warmth and assurance of Fe will find a source of confidence in Ni’s steadiness, both psychologically and visually.

The result is often a persona that feels parental; possessing great understanding and sense of mentorship. This is an effect I often refer to as beta charm, as it exists to varying degrees across all types with the Fe-Ti and Ni-Se oscillations. A natural level of persuasiveness emanates from these types which they can leverage in their interaction with others.

Their head will engage in a drift-and-jut rhythm seen in Pi lead types. First the eyes will drift to the sides, causing the neck to relax and the head to roll slightly towards the shoulders, then they will come forward again with a partially accentuated Fe head nod. Another signal comes into focus in this type from the secondary oscillation prioritizing Fe over Ti; the presence of apple cheeks.

When Ti is prominent in the psyche, the region directly below the eyes flattens considerably due to a complete absence of tension. However, in types who prioritize Fe over Ti, this flat region is far smaller and the tone of the zygomaticus major increases. As a result, when the NiFe smiles, their Fe smile will often cause a spherical bulge to form on the cheeks as seen in Figure 56.b.

Like Te’s taut cheeks, this signal is not always visible if the user has naturally low cheekbones, but will manifest if the cheekbones are average or strong. This signal is also differs fundamentally from Te’s taut cheeks in the way that muscular tension forms the shape of the bulge. For the NiFe the bottom of the bulge is rounder, and this round bulge blends perfectly into the curtain effect of the zygomaticus major where the cheeks are pulled to the sides.

In contrast, Te’s taut cheeks are typically formed due to the horizontal splitting of the cheeks, giving the bulge a flat bottom edge. In Te types, heavier stretching will also occur, making for an overall less relaxed appearance below the bulge as well as all around the mouth.

  1. THE GURU

The worldview of Ni, due to the manner in which it weaves together widescale associations between concepts, offers a paradigm that is rich, full and can in some form account for the causality behind the majority of life’s events. This places the NiFe in a position of teacher, where the tapestry of Ni can be related to others through Fe’s channel. But due to the level of extrapolation embedded within Ni’s worldview, the NiFe guru will tend toward a surreal interpretation of reality, often including mystical elements in its delivery.

This is different than the mysticism that may be found in a teacher or priest for an existing religion or belief system. In the NiFe guru, mysticism finds its raw origins, creating novel ways of interconnecting all elements of reality, particularly those that relate to life and the ethical principle. We see an example of an NiFe guru in Antero Alli, an astrologer, author of many books on the soul and consciousness, and founder of the ParaTheatrical workshop.

In all NiFe’s, the polar process Se plays a critical role in feeding experience into Ni in order to maximize its capacity for abstraction and in the case of Antero, paratheatre serves as that channel. Paratheatrical expression is a practice in sensory relaxation that eliminates the rigidity of the body, opening up the self to the visceral, primal and impressionistic through uncoordinated dance.

For Ni lead types, Se is often felt as the gateway into a special source of knowledge and a more direct connection to raw sensory experience is often given divine connotation. Here we understand why sensory experience is assigned the role of a channel in many esoteric belief systems. To an Ni lead type, novel insights ultimately emerge from Ni, not the sensory world directly, but the sensory becomes a necessary catalyst to their Ni’s optimal functioning.

What is felt as a gateway into some visceral source of enlightenment is Se’s oscillation with the abstraction of their primary function. Yet an Ni lead type might only invite Se’s input on its own terms. Sensory connection is not commonly sought through a chaotic influx of stimuli or an overwhelming pace as we find in a physical sport, but in the tranquility of meditation or a guided experience.

For this subtype, Ti is often used to give logical structure to vision; to quantify, often in some linguistic form, what is felt as a core truth. Here, language has the capacity to encapsulate the essence of a pattern felt axiomatically across their entire worldview. What may result is a poetic, proverbial form of Fe articulation that is simultaneously precise as well as general. And if technical metaphors prove insufficient to describe a phenomenon which they sense has more interwoven facets, a lexicon may be devised to define these subtleties.

Slowly the NiFe guru may evolve a definition and interpretation of reality where the actual world is replaced entirely by the proxy of their worldview. And when it succeeds in accounting for all facets of life, even itself, the guru may feel as though they are living in a staged or fabricated drama; acting out their part in a larger, now decrypted, puzzle. But they remain, instead, immersed in their own paradigm and deeply disconnected from a very real world.

  1. THE CONTENTIOUS VISIONARY

When the Fe function is pronounced in the NiFe, filled with moral concerns and directive agendas, what often results is contention. The position of Fe in this hierarchy creates a natural level of friction due to the posession of an impetus which their psychology cannot sufficiently manifest.

On one hand, this type is reactive and most at peace in non-action, but on the other hand their ethical process gives them an urgency to leave this inaction to champion the cause of their vision if their vision perceives an injustice or irregularity in the world. Fe, being a far more yang process than Ni, will threaten to overpower Ni and burst out to proclaim the visions of Ni. Always, however, the agenda Fe will pedal will be one emerging from the Ni tapestry.

This frustration is further aggravated by the nearly untranslatable and cryptic element of their Ni. Attempts to convey Ni’s vision can often lead to confusion or skepticism when Ni’s ideas are felt as having an unquantifiable nature to other people. In extreme cases, the inability to properly communicate the importance of what they envision makes this subtype prone to consider others incompetent; unable to grasp something they feel is so clear.

But Ni’s tapestry is difficult to perfectly translate to others since it is not only subjectively formed but abstractly congealed. In contrast, the SiFe type does not carry such heavy internal friction between vision and expression. The reasoning for the matters which SiFe types may seek to address are at the very least more easily understood, if not obviously seen, by others. This is because the data which the SiFe type uses to come to a conclusion can be communicated through a series of static anchor points.

They can more clearly delineate the necessity for a certain course of action. Add to this the endless levity and buoyancy of their Ne and it becomes far more uncommon for SiFe types to form lasting frictions of this sort. But for the NiFe, the persistence effect of the Ni-Se pairing makes ignoring this sort of friction very challenging. They may become the brewing poets or mavericks of society who proclaim the social failures of the establishment to all who will lend their ear.

  1. THE GRANDFATHER

Still, not all NiFe are visionaries and gurus. A great deal of them can also be found in commonplace lifestyles. Especially if their Ni does not see a world that their own Fe has very strong ethical investment in fixing, the NiFe will, like many Pi types, take a more grandfatherly role. They may become the soothing voice at the dinner table with many stories to tell or philosophies to discuss.

We see examples of this subtype in Morgan Freeman, Garrison Keillor and Leonard Nimoy. There is an unrushed relaxation about them, as with the SiFe, that invites listening and communion. Garrison Keillor, a storyteller and long-time radio personality expressed the sentiment of this subtype in a 1991 UWTV interview, saying:

“That’s one thing that drew me to radio, is that you could take your time. You could talk and talk for a long time, and be invisible (…) without making eye contact. To talk to people without enduring their scrutiny – just to talk – seemed so wonderful; it still does. (…) Half the time it’s not that great, but it’s sociable. And they forgive you for it. You’ve done no harm.”

The act of storytelling, for the NiFe, is a means by which experience, and thus life, is communicated and shared. And for a type who leads their psyche with their worldview, something fundamentally soulful exists about this form of socialization.

To be allowed the opportunity to convey that broad tapestry and have its conveying be a bridge between people satisfies the impetus of Ni, Fe and the human heart. This subtype carries many similarities to the SiFe, who may also share this storyteller tendency. The NiFe may have a rather figurative way of relaying information, making use of graphical descriptions and prose.

  1. THE COVERT ADDICT

In all their shades, NiFe will have a noted relationship with their Se, whether it’s one of negligence – manifesting as staunch self-denial and conservativeness – or one of private indulgence in some guilty pleasure. In some cases the NiFe may be a highly sensitive person, avoiding strong stimulation for its capacity to interfere with the calm of their primary function, but in others their Se’s experiences are happily invited.

From the appreciation of landscapes, to the art of photography, people watching, yoga, martial arts and dance, Se will act as a point of relief from the monopolization of their primary process. Other NiFe may feel unable to connect meaningfully with the external or release the grip of their Ni without the need of some stimulant, leading at times to dependency. The NiFe may live a completely sensationally deprived life except for a single vice which they use in excess.

When this rebellious edge is combined with their potential for social charm, the iconic, silent “bad boy” is created. We find this aura in NiFe James Dean, as well as in NiFe Justin Bieber. There is an unhurried, casual air about them which makes them feel unreachable yet tantalizing due to their voice’s taunting gentleness and warmth.

But the vultology of both these men deserves a special note. Dean and Bieber will evidence a brow which rises toward the center, rather than the outer edges of the eyes, as is most typical of the SiFe. But as seen in Figure 56.a, a brow raised above the eyes, whether corrugated at the center or edges, will still confirm Ni if the eyes below retain a lowered eyelid as well as all other qualities belonging to the Ni-Se pairing.

As we’ll learn in Chapter 30, this is because the actual tension immediately around the eyes is a far more significant indicator of one’s perceptive process than the precise shape of the brow, which is more subject to vary.

While the SiFe carries a pair of open, naïve eyes embedded in Si’s cavity,  NiFe like Dean and Bieber will always carry a sleepy quality, characterized also by a faraway focus, an inertial energy and a strong lack of buoyancy. In both we witness a psychology directed toward a simplicity of interpretation and a visceral experience of events. Topics are explored not through divergence of ideas, but by a rather tentative estimation of how the present may unravel.

In another, somewhat more charismatic example of the addict we find NiFe Leonardo DiCaprio, whose many evasive and scheming acting roles personify a wide range of beta personalities. Although DiCaprio himself is never quite as covert and cunning in person as his cinema roles, the origin of these qualities, which he imbues in his characters, are present in his own distant, sensational and alluring persona.

For a complete account of this type’s vultology, we can look at interviews of the following NiFe public figures:
